Soon after, the cities of Embree and Duck Creek merged and the three areas became the town of Garland, which was incorporated in 1891.

The Old Duck Creek Post Office was founded in 1856 in a community of Embree, just off the Santa Fe Rail line. As Garland grew, it was clad for the Dallas and Greenville railroad, which ran from Dallas to Greenville and then on to Dallas.
The following year, the state of Texas awarded the neighborhood its first-ever Texas Landmark Award, a $1.5 million grant from the Texas Department of Natural Resources, and the city became known as Garland. Already in the middle of the 19th century settlers came to what is now Garland and began to operate agriculture and railway lines. The system in Missouri, Kansas and Texas, better known as Katy, was originally owned and operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers and the Texas Railroad Company.
In 1888-90, the newly founded city of Garland reached a population of 478 people and built a high school called Garland College and a post office. At the beginning of the 20th century, Garland began rebuilding the historic square with bricks and new fountains for fire protection.
The facility is an integral part of Garland's history and owes much of its success to Charlie Newman, who ran it during construction in 1963. Charles R. Matthews was mayor in the 1980s and was an early member of the board of the Hope Clinic. He later became a member and elected to the Texas Railroad Commission, served as a deacon at the First Baptist Church in Garland, resigned to head the city's Department of Public Works and Public Safety (DPS), and became involved in many other organizations in and around Garland.
On July 1, the college's trustees will be elected, the graduates of the Garland Citizens Fire Academy in 2017 and the citizens of Garland in 2018.
