Things to Do in Garland: Arts and Culture in the Country

Things to do in Garland range from fun for the entire family to cultural events and educational excursions. Here are just some of things to do in Garland:

The Patty Granville Arts Center
The Patty Granville Arts Center is a community hub visited by more than 100,000 people annually. Owned and operated by the city of Garland, the theater is host to hundreds of events annually, including plays, concerts, meetings, seminars, receptions and other gatherings. The center consists of the 750-seat Brownlee Auditorium and a small theater with seating for 200, plus an atrium that is a common venue for wedding receptions and other occasions.

Hawaiian Falls
During the summer months, Hawaiian Falls is a place to beat the heat as Garland's premier water park. Among the park's attractions is the Torpedo, a dual tunnel ride that drops swimmers from a great height and shoots them through a long chute. Swimmers can also relax at Waikiki Beach, a 16,000-square-foot wave pool suitable for young children and families. The mix of attractions also include plenty of inner-tube rides, slides, waterfalls, geysers and other features.

Landmark Museum
This small museum, housed inside an old Santa Fe railroad depot, provides insight about the early days of the city of Garland and the history of the town up to present day. Among artifacts on display are items from early settlers, some of the area's first newspapers, antique farm tools and quilts. The museum has been open since 1974 and is also home to the Garland Landmark Society charged with preserving the town's past.

Westlake Skate Center
This spacious skating rink has all the lights and music you need for a fun night of roller skating in the Garland area. The rink is open for public skating Wednesdays through Sundays and for private parties on Mondays and Tuesdays. It provides regular and in-line skate rentals and a snack bar is on the premises selling a variety of refreshments. Beginners may be interested in skating lessons available every Saturday.

Garland Opry
The Garland Country Music Association exists to develop and showcase local talent by awarding scholarships to young musicians and providing a venue for local bands and soloists to perform. Though closed for a few years after the death of its founder, the Garland Opry has been revived in historic downtown Garland. It is now operated by a nonprofit organization and presents both country music and gospel on a regular basis.
